  1. Illinois, "The Prairie State", has given the U.S. many famous Americans,
  2. including: Saul Bellow, Jack Benny, Ray Bradbury, William Jennings Bryan,
  3. Stephen A. Douglas, Ulysses S. Grant, Ernest Hemingway, Abraham Lincoln,
  4. Ronald Reagan, Adlai Stevenson and Frank Lloyd Wright.  A virtual prairie,
  5. as the states nickname suggests, except for a few open hills in the south.
  6. Illinois was first settled by fur traders in 1673 and by 1680 the first
  7. French fort was built at Peoria.  France ceded the area to the British in
  8. 1763 and American General George Rogers Clark captured Fort Kaskaskia from
  9. the British in 1778.  By 1832, after the Black Hawk War, the Indian
  10. population was defeated and by the 1850s railroads crossed the area. 
  11. Illinois was the 21st State to enter the Union on December 3, 1818.
